Bayern Munich drew their third consecutive Bundesliga game as a 92nd-minute penalty from Serhou Guirassy saw Stuttgart earn a 2-2 draw on Saturday.
Mathys Tel opened the scoring for Bayern but saw his effort cancelled out early in the second half, although Jamal Musiala restored the advantage for Julian Nagelsmann’s side with a fine strike from inside the box.
But Guirassy, who had seen two goals struck off, netted a well-deserved equaliser deep in stoppage time to secure a point.
Predictably, Bayern dominated possession early on but chances on goal were few and far between, with the hosts’ first opportunity coming 18 minutes in as Joshua Kimmich’s free-kick whistled narrowly over the bar.
On the half-hour mark, an excellent double save from Florian Muller was needed as Tel and Serge Gnabry were both denied from close range amid some penalty-box pinball.
The pace stepped up at this point and some nice play on the edge of the Stuttgart box handed a nice chance to Gnabry, who bent his effort over the bar.
After 36 minutes, Tel became Bayern’s youngest goalscorer ever when he drilled home a cut-back from Alphonso Davies, with a bit of help from a deflection.
The second half nearly got off to a rough start for Bayern as Guirassy tapped home from close range, but VAR saved the day after spotting the smallest of shirt pulls on Joshua Kimmich in the build-up.
The warning signs were there and Stuttgart bagged a deserved equaliser 57 minutes in as Chris Fuhrich found some space in the box and fired home.
Parity didn’t last long though as Musiala went straight down the other end and drilled into the bottom corner to restore Bayern’s lead.
Stuttgart chose to remain positive and nearly got their reward with 16 minutes to go when Guirassy unleashed a glorious strike from range that crashed back off the post.
Guirassy saw another effort chalked off soon after following another foul on Kimmich which was far more convincing than the first VAR intervention.
As the clock ticked on, it was Stuttgart who looked more likely to score and they landed a 91st-minute penalty as Guirassy was caught by Matthijs de Ligt in the penalty box. The summer signing stepped up and thundered past Neuer to tie things up.
GK: Manuel Neuer – 6/10 – Not a whole lot to do. Couldn’t really help the goals.
RB: Noussair Mazraoui – 8/10 – A real attacking threat down the right. One of his better performances in a Bayern shirt.
CB: Matthijs de Ligt – 5/10 – A bit too aggressive in his challenges and was punished as he gave away the late penalty.
CB: Dayot Upamecano – 5/10 – A solid first half but looked flustered in the second as Stuttgart came flying forward.
LB: Alphonso Davies – 6/10 – A real threat going forward as his assist came after a typically excellent driving run. A poor pass for the equaliser, however.
DM: Joshua Kimmich – 5/10 – Caught in possession twice for Stuttgart’s disallowed goal, the first of which was incredibly fortunate.
DM: Leon Goretzka – 4/10 – Pushed too high and didn’t look fit enough to track back. Watched on as Bayern’s midfield had to endure a fair bit of pressure in the first half.
RM: Mathys Tel – 7/10 – A constant threat down the right wing and took his goal with real composure. Remember the name.
AM: Jamal Musiala – 6/10 – Felt a bit crowded out by all of Bayern’s non-strikers, but when he did finally get the chance, he made no mistake.
LM: Serge Gnabry – 5/10 – Similarly swamped by his own team-mates. Disappointing first touch at times.
ST: Thomas Muller – 5/10 – Found it quite hard to get involved in Bayern’s attack. Didn’t seem to enjoy life as a striker.
SUB: Josip Stanisic (61′ for Mazraoui) – 6/10 – Not as effective as Mazraoui but didn’t do a lot wrong.
SUB: Leroy Sane (61′ for Tel) – 6/10 – A few nice moments but didn’t get on the ball too often.
SUB: Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting (68′ for Muller) – 5/10 – Didn’t do a whole lot better than Muller.
SUB: Sadio Mane (81′ for Musiala) – N/A
SUB: Ryan Gravenberch (81 for Gnabry) – N/A
Manager: Julian Nagelsmann – 4/10 – His system seemed to clog up Bayern’s attack far too often, and after the smart move of bringing Mazraoui in central to help Kimmich, took the right-back off and invited so much pressure back on the struggling midfield.
