The US men’s national team triumphed 1-0 over Iran, as a goal from Christian Pulisic confirmed the American side’s place in the round of 16.
After missing out on the 2018 edition of the tournament, the United States have returned bigger and better. They conclude the World Cup group stage in second place with five points, after defeating Iran and drawing with England and Wales.
But nerves were high before kick off, as the USMNT needed the victory to qualify for the round of 16.
The USMNT completed a couple threatening opportunities in the first 30 minutes, but failed to capitalize on the situation.
Until Christian Pulisic pulled through for the United States. A ball by Sergino Dest into the box propelled the Chelsea figure to head the ball into the back of the net.
The USMNT almost made it 2-0 with a goal from Tim Weah, but it was quickly ruled offside.
The second half saw Iran try to come back. Questionable substitution choices by head coach Gregg Berhalter left the USMNT vulnerable to an equalizer.
Regardless, the USMNT secured their ticket to the knockout round. They are set to face the Group A winners Netherlands.
