United States Men’s National Team head coach Gregg Berhalter is set to open talks with the US Soccer Federation regarding a new contract, according to reports.
Berhalter has been in charge of the USMNT since December 2018, leading them to Concacaf Nations League and Gold Cup titles in 2021 and a first World Cup appearance since 2014.
In Qatar, the Stars and Stripes took five points and went unbeaten in Group B alongside England, Iran, and Wales, before crashing out in the round-of-16 with a 3-1 defeat to the Netherlands.
Despite his achievements, there is a strong core of supporters who would prefer to see Berhalter replaced for the 2026 World Cup cycle, with the United States already qualified as co-hosts alongside Mexico and Canada.
A number of concerns have been raised by those supporters, including player selection issues and a lack of attacking output despite the increased level of talent within the pool.
Berhalter’s current deal is soon due to expire but, according to ESPN’s Jeff Carlisle, the former Columbus Crew and Hammarby head coach has entered ‘very early’ discussions about possibly extending his stay in charge of the USMNT.
Alongside these discussions, it is understood Berhalter is interested in pursuing a return to European management.
Following the end of the World Cup, Berhalter boasts a 37-11-12 record with the USMNT, who are placed 16th in the FIFA World Rankings.
