FC Cincinnati have bolstered their defensive options with the signing of Yerson Mosquera on loan from English Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers, the club announced Thursday.

The 21-year-old’s initial deal keeps him at TQL Stadium until June 30 but also includes an option for Cincinnati to extend the loan through the rest of the 2023 MLS season. 90min understands there is no purchase option included in the loan, though FC Cincinnati were interested and pushed for one.

“Yerson is a tremendously talented young player that has a real desire to defend,” Cincinnati general manager Chris Albright said in a release. “His size, pace, and technical ability will be a great fit for our group, and we’re delighted to welcome him to the club.”

Mosquera will provide another valuable option at center-back for Cincinnati alongside United States international Matt Miazga, veteran Nick Hagglund, and SuperDraft pick Ian Murphy.

A four-time international at youth level for Colombia, Mosquera has played one EFL Cup game for Wolves so far since arriving from Atletico Nacional in his homeland. There, the defender made 26 appearances across all competitions, scoring once.

“I’m very excited to join FC Cincinnati,” said Mosquera. “Thank you to Chris, Pat [Noonan], and the staff for this opportunity. I look forward to meeting the fans and playing for them at TQL Stadium this season.”

Mosquera’s arrival marks the latest step as FC Cincinnati look to qualify for the MLS Cup Playoffs for the second successive year in 2023 after making their post-season debut last time out.

The Orange and Blue open the new campaign at home to the Houston Dynamo on February 25.
