Joao Cancelo has admitted he was surprised to learn that Bayern Munich are preparing to part ways with manager Julian Nagelsmann.
The full-back, who is on loan at Bayern from Manchester City, was playing for Portugal on Thursday evening when it was revealed that the German side had made the shock decision to dismiss Nagelsmann and hire Thomas Tuchel in his place.
The news was delivered to Cancelo after Portugal’s 4-0 victory over Liechtenstein and the full-back admitted he was just as surprised as the fans.
“I didn’t know, I didn’t know,” Cancelo told Sport TV. “I am a little surprised, yes.
“I want to thank coach Nagelsmann because he’s the one that wanted me at Bayern. That news has caught me by surprise but the best of luck to him. I’ll try when I get back to try learn the ways of the new coach. I hope it all goes well because we have a lot of important matches coming up in the decisive part of the season.
“Bayern is a team that, at both an individual and group level, is always ready to win it all.”

Asked about Tuchel’s imminent arrival, Cancelo was quick to remember how the German ruined his Champions League dream with Chelsea in 2021.
“As for Tuchel, he made me lose a Champions League final, so I hope he will win it for me this year!” Cancelo added.
Bayern’s first match after the international break comes against Bundesliga leaders, and Tuchel’s former employers, Borussia Dortmund.
The Bavarians also have a Champions League clash against Cancelo’s parent side, Manchester City, to look forward to. The full-back will be eligible to feature against Pep Guardiola’s side as UEFA rules forbid clubs from blocking their loan players from playing.
