Erik ten Hag faced questions on David de Gea’s Manchester United role after his calamitous performance in Thursday’s 3-0 loss at Sevilla.

The Red Devils were dumped out of the UEFA Europa League at the quarter-final stage having been one of the favourites to go all the way in the competition.

They led 2-0 in the first leg at Old Trafford, but own goals from Tyrell Malacia and Harry Maguire in the final 10 minutes saw Sevilla draw level.

United wilted under the cosh back in Spain. De Gea’s hospital pass to Maguire saw him give the ball away and gift Youssef En-Nesyri an opener, while the goalkeeper’s continued inability to claim crosses saw Loic Bade nod in Sevilla’s second of the evening.

De Gea’s embarrassment was compounded when he raced out of his box to control a high ball, but mis-controlled it instead and allowed En-Nesyri to round off the scoring.

Ten Hag was asked in his post-match press conference about De Gea’s suitability and whether he will continue between the sticks.

“He’s the one with the most clean sheets in the Premier League, that shows he’s a very capable goalkeeper,” the Dutchman replied.

90min understands United are confident of tying De Gea down to a new contract with his current deal up in the summer.

However, they would also like to bring in another goalkeeper as they look to plan for the long-term.

Porto’s Diogo Costa and Brentford’s David Raya – who has taken De Gea’s place in the Spain national team setup – are of interest to United.
