Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic has been hit with an eight-game suspension for his push on referee Chris Kavanagh during last month’s defeat to Manchester United in the FA Cup. Reacting to the dismissal of teammate Willian, Mitrovic squared up to Kavanagh and put his hands on the official, earning an immediate red card. A three-game suspension was deemed ‘insufficient’ by the Football Association, who have now handed down a longer punishment. Football commentary is regularly chastised for leaning upon cliches but some events are so perfectly captured by a well-worn phrase it would be criminal to pass up the opportunity. The startling, rip-snorting strikes delivered by Michael Keane and Vincent Kompany, for the azure-clad Everton and Manchester City respectively, are unerring embodiments of bolts from the blue. Like a thunderclap from a cloudless sky, both goals were violent works of art that seemed scarcely capable of originating from the boot of two no-nonsense centre-backs. Militao’s central defensive partner that night was Antonio Rudiger, but the German was absent from group training on Tuesday morning after missing the 6-0 thrashing of Real Valladolid in La Liga at the weekend because of a knee complaint. According to their interim manager, who replaced a coach that was sacked after publicly calling out his players, who was hired by a sporting director that is now banned from worldwide football, Tottenham are “not a club in crisis”.
