Fernando Ortiz made history with Club America on Tuesday, triumphing 3-0 over Atletico de San Luis to tie the team record for most consecutive victories at eight.
The victory also propelled the Eagles to first place of the 2022 Liga MX Apertura table, with 28 points in 13 games and a record of 9W-3L-1D. Though Ortiz is on track to lead Club America to a successful liguilla performance, he maintained he “has not achieved anything” in the azulcrema club.
“It is going to be a repeated phrase, but I am not paying attention to whether or not they succeed, I am not one of those coaches, I look at the day after day, I am more concerned about other things to do with respect to whether it has been achieved or not in a match,” he stated at a press conference.
“The ones who have achieved it are the players. I have not achieved anything. I am here to train them day by day, so that they can understand what is going on in my head.”
But the work is not over. With five regular-season games remaining, Club America must remain in the top four slots to qualify directly into the playoffs.
“It makes me happy, we played a very difficult game, I’ll stay with that, then the rest is daily work that the players achieve day by day so that the team that was at times today can be seen on the field,” said the Argentine coach.
The team returns to the pitch on Saturday when visiting Necaxa. Should the Eagles win, Fernando Ortiz would surpass the record of Miguel Ángel ‘Zurdo’ López, who led the Águilas in two stages, from 1984 to 1987 and from 1992 to 1993.
