Arsenal manager Jonas Eidevall is well aware of the threats that West Ham pose to his side when the two clubs meet in the WSL on Sunday, highlighting pace and aerial ability as particular sources of danger to his table-topping side.
West Ham have started the season well, winning three of their opening five games and sitting in a cluster of clubs just three points below joint early leaders Arsenal and Manchester United.
The Hammers have actually lost all seven previous WSL games they have played against the Gunners, which is their worst record against any side in the division. But they have won their last two in a row against Aston Villa and Reading having improved again over the summer.
Arsenal are aiming to set a WSL record for consecutive wins – they equalled it last time out against Liverpool with their 12th successive league win. But they won’t have an easy ride against a Hammers team that gave Chelsea a run for their money only last month.
“I think it’s pretty clear when you see West Ham play, that they’re a strong team on the counter attack,” Eidevall said, via Arsenal.com.
“I think that they have some really good individual players up front who can do a few different things with Viviane Asseyi. She’s pacy, she’s very good at taking on players one-v-one.
“Dagny Brynjarsdottir is one of the better players in the air in the whole division and she’s very threatening coming in with runs from behind. So we really have to be aware of that pace and the threats that they pose. So that’s what we need to try and nullify.”
Brynjarsdottir in particular has scored three WSL goals this season, which is more than Vivianne Miedema and the same number as B*th Mead.
