Pachuca lifted the 2022 Liga MX Apertura trophy on Sunday, after triumphing 8-2 over Toluca on aggregate. The team first defeated the Red Devils 5-1 in the first leg on Thursday, before sealing the deal with a 3-1 victory at home to kick off the championship celebrations in front of fans.
The victory stands as the team’s seventh league title.
Goalkeeper Oscar Ustari served as a key component on the team’s 2022 Apertura success, conceding 15 goals in 17 matches to inspire Pachuca to fourth place on the table and winners of the Liguilla. He reflected on the victory, calling the team his ‘family’.
“Pachuca is a family and for me it has become my family because it was the team that gave me the opportunity to return to Mexico and be able to show that I could, that I had recovered well after everything that had happened, so to It is like a home for me and for my family. We feel very comfortable and very identified with the institution,” he said to TUDN’s Hugo Ramirez.
“To the family [ I dedicate the title]. I have a very intimate environment here, where there are friends, there are people who have helped me to be who I am today, people who were there to get me up every time I fell. I dedicate it to them.
“Then, I dedicate it to my colleagues, because they have a colleague who is very demanding, who understands that with work things work and they follow the line of one and we can achieve this type of thing. And to the fans who deserved it. We had left them with that illusion four months ago and today we responded in a magnificent way.”
Pachuca last reached a final during the 2022 Liga MX Clausura, before falling to back-to-back champions Atlas. But the loss only motivated the team more, pushing them to their Apertura success.
The players will now be given a few weeks of vacation before reporting to the club for the preseason. The 2023 Liga MX Clausura kicks off on January 6.
