Real Madrid lost ground on La Liga leaders Barcelona after they were held to a goalless draw at home to Real Sociedad.
The result leaves Los Blancos five points adrift of top spot, but Sociedad deserve immense credit for their display.
It was an open game from the off, which makes the goalless final score even more surprising. The first chance fell to Sociedad just four minutes in, but Alexander Sorloth was unable to convert.
Vinicius Junior fired back ten minutes later, beating Igor Zubeldia easily before putting his shot just inches wide of the post.
As the first half wore on, Madrid slowly gained control. They should have made that control count too after forcing a mistake from the Sociedad backline. Karim Benzema raced onto a poor back-pass and set up Vinicius Junior, but Alex Remiro came to the visitors’ rescue.
The second half followed much the same pattern with Madrid pressing and Sociedad resisting. However, Sociedad came into the game in the last 20 minutes.
Takefusa Kubo should have done much better with two presentable chances, but Thibaut Courtois was up to the challenge both times.
Madrid pressed for a late winner, but were unable to find one on a frustrating night for Carlo Ancelotti’s men.
