Real Salt Lake have announced the signing of midfielder Maikel Chang to a contract extension.

Chang’s new deal runs for at least one year through the 2023 MLS season, though the club haven’t specified whether they hold an option to extend beyond that point.

The 31-year-old ex-Cuba international is preparing for his fourth campaign as an RSL player, making 84 senior appearances for the club so far, scoring five goals and providing nine assists. Chang has also made 73 appearances for Real Monarchs – RSL’s MLS NEXT Pro affiliate who previously played in USL – scoring 19 goals and assisting a further 18.

“I’m very happy to continue with this club, I think we have formed a great family,” Chang said in a statement

“I expect that we improve this year on previous performances, in no small part to our amazing fans who have taken our stadium atmosphere to a whole new level.”

Chang’s contract extension comes a day after starting goalkeeper Zac MacMath also penned a new deal with the club, while veteran defender Marcelo Silva also extended his stay with RSL earlier in the offseason.

RSL begin their 2023 campaign away at the Vancouver Whitecaps on February 25.
