St. Louis City SC announced former City Football Group executive, Diego Gigliani, as the club’s new president and general manager. It’s a big and bold move by the upstart expansion team currently sitting atop Major League Soccer’s Western Conference table.

Gigliani will work closely with St. Louis’ CEO, Carolyn Kindle, overseeing day-to-day operations, including sporting, revenue, marketing, operations and administration and community departments.

“Diego brings an incredible amount of international soccer expertise that will help us take the next step in our ambitious journey to become a global soccer brand,” Kindle said in a release.

Kindle’s counting on his decade at England’s City Football Group (CFG) – the powerhouse holding company that owns Manchester City FC in the Premier League, Girona FC in La Liga, Major League Soccer’s NYCFC, and Serie B’s Palermo, among others, to do just that and build on the team’s momentum.

At CFG, he was most recently their managing director of emerging clubs – a post earned from a stellar tenure running the Group’s worldwide media and innovation activities, earning awards for “Top Digital Executive” and a notch as one of 20 global sports innovators selected by sport technology site SportTechie.

“I’ve been strongly attracted to this team’s commitment to the community, and really impressed by the results achieved in such a short period of time – the brand launch, stadium build, season ticket base, merchandise sales and much more,” said Gigliani. “I’m looking forward to building on the club’s record-breaking launch and impressive start to the season to help grow City SC’s reputation.”

Born in Argentina, Gigliani previously lived in the US, earning an MBA from the Wharton School and graduating Summa Cum Laude from Boston University with a bachelor’s in business administration.

He will begin this summer, pending the receipt of his U.S. employment visa, according to the club.
