Bayern Munich have confirmed that Sadio Mane has suffered a right fibula injury and will miss this weekend’s clash with Schalke 04.

The club haven’t, however, confirmed that the forward will miss the upcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, but have stated that they are currently in contact with the medical staff of the Senegalese Football Association.

Mane suffered the injury just 20 minutes into Bayern’s emphatic 6-1 win over Werder Bremen on Tuesday evening, being carted off with the ailment.

A club statement on the injury reads: “Sadio Mane has suffered an injury to the head of his right fibula in FC Bayern’s 6-1 win against Werder Bremen. Africa’s Footballer of the Year will miss Saturday’s game against Schalke. Further examinations will follow in the coming days. FC Bayern is also in contact with the medical staff of the Senegalese Football Association.”

Bayern were initially confident that the injury was not serious and a report from Bild on Tuesday night stated that it was merely a ‘pinched nerve’, but a L’Equipe report on Wednesday stated that it is indeed a serious injury which will require the ex-Liverpool man to miss the World Cup.

Senegal are set to name their squad for the finals on November 11.
