Manchester United midfielder Vilde Boe Risa has been recalled to the Norway squad after being dropped in the wake of Euro 2022 and initially being snubbed again this month.
With new manager Hege Riise seeking to shake things up after a poor summer, Boe Risa was cut from the squad on the basis that she hadn’t been playing often enough at club level.
“The way I understand it, [Riise] probably doesn’t think United is the right club for me and should consider something else. It’s tough to hear,” the player explained in late August when the September squad – the first since Euro 2022 – was announced.
With little changing in her situation at United in the opening weeks of 2022/23 – Boe Risa was on the bench for the first two WSL game of the season but did start in the Continental Cup – the midfielder was again left out for Norway’s October friendlies against Brazil and Netherlands.
But with Rosenborg midfielder Cesilie Andreassen dropping out of the squad because of injury, Boe Risa got the call. Her arrival comes too late to be involved in Friday night’s game against Brazil, but she will be available for the Netherlands game on Tuesday.
Even with the loss of Jackie Groenen to Paris Saint-Germain during the summer, but after the WSL transfer deadline had already passed, Manchester United manager Marc Skinner has favoured Hayley Ladd alongside club captain Katie Zelem in central midfield so far this season.
Forcing her way into the United lineup will be crucial for Boe Risa in the build up to the 2023 World Cup next summer. But her call-up now shows that she at least remains on Riise’s radar.
