New Wolves signing Sasa Kalajdzic is facing an extended spell on the sidelines after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury in the win over Southampton on Saturday.

The Austrian striker came off at half-time on his debut complaining of pain in his knee. He was replaced by Goncalo Guedes and Wolves later went on to secure the a first Premier League victory of the season with a strike from Daniel Podence in the 46th minute.

However, Kalajdzic – signed from Stuttgart last week – is likely to be out for the best part of a year with the ACL injury.

A statement from Wolves’ medical team reads: “Sasa felt a pain in his knee late in the first half against Southampton. Unfortunately, scans reveal an anterior cruciate injury and he will see a knee specialist tomorrow. We now need to support Sasa in his recovery and further updates will follow.”

Kalajdzic scored six Bundesliga goals last season, having enjoyed an even better 2020/21 campaign where he netted 16 times in Germany’s top flight.

His injury is another blow in the attacking ranks for manager Bruno Lage, who was also without Raul Jimenez for the win over the Saints.

Wolves have also revealed they are specially monitoring the Mexican’s workload, having had an interrupted pre-season due to injury.

They add: “Raul’s pre-season was interrupted by a knee injury which means that he is still building his resilience and his ability to recover quickly during periods of match congestion.

“It was felt that his body needed a few more days to recover after he felt a pain in his groin during the warm up and we did not want to put him at increased risk of injury.”
