Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has been awarded the Yashin Trophy for his standout performances during the 2021/22 season.

After largely failing to replicate performances of his Atletico Madrid and Chelsea days following his 2018 move to the Santiago Bernabeu, Courtois put in several top-notch displays as Real Madrid won La Liga and the Champions League last season.

His crowning glory came in May’s Champions League final, keeping a clean sheet and producing a number of unbelievable saves as Los Blancos beat Liverpool 1-0 at the Stade de France. Courtois was named Player of the Match for his efforts.

Courtois becomes the third winner of the award after it was first handed out in 2019, with Alisson taking the inaugural prize. After France Football cancelled the Ballon d’Or awards in 2020, they returned in 2021 and Gianluigi Donnarumma was handed the Yashin Trophy.

While this is Courtois’ first official time winning the award, the RSSSF retroactively declared that he would have won in 2018 as he was the highest-ranked goalkeeper in voting for the Ballon d’Or.

Courtois has carried his fine form from last season into the current campaign, with Real Madrid still unbeaten this term and looking a safe bet to at least retain their La Liga title.
